SiACo "Sing against Cortisone" Study 2020 - First results

A prospective voice therapy and vocal pedagogic intervention study on asthma and COPD patients with hoarseness after inhaled cortisone therapy.

In 2020, the SiACo therapy study was conducted jointly by the Institute for Voice Pedagogy at JAM MUSIC LAB - Private University for Jazz and Popular Music Vienna, the University ENT Clinic Vienna and the Center for Communication Medicine.

After a first evaluation of the data, the available results of the voice therapy and vocal pedagogy study SiACo (SingAgainstCortisone) show that voice training based on the One-Voice-Technique (https://www.one-voice-technique.com) has a therapeutic effect on patients with a certain hoarseness.
A first comparison of the two study results of this medical study shows that the one-voice training in speech therapy and the one voice training in the choir group are approximately the same. 

The therapeutic results in the subjects of the choir group are a significantly reduced mucus formation on the vocal folds and an improvement in the jitter value (irregularities in the basic frequency of the tone sound). The vocal fold closure was much tighter, could even be doubled (!).

Also the volume, i.e. the sound pressure level (SPL - SoundPressureLevel) could almost be doubled. The duration of tone hold at unvoiced and voiced "s" was considerably longer for the participants after the intervention, while the duration of tone hold at "a" remained more or less the same.

Evaluation of the Voice Handicap Index (VHI) and COPD Assessment Test (CAT) questionnaires showed that the participants were no longer in the pathological range after the 8 units of vocal training and choral singing.
