The title of the seminar is sufficiently descriptive of the arguments that will treated, and although careful observation and analysis will be employed, no definitive or preconceived conclusions will be proposed, rather a simple series of observations will be made according to the outline below. The purpose is to stimulate the powers of cognitive listening in young musicians, and they will be actively involved in the sessions.

A - Random examples

  • The progression ii / V / I and its derivatives
  • The use of the 3rd as a relationship between tonal spheres
  • #9s and b9s as passing tones or rather an integral part of the harmony
  • Swing in classical music - proto rhythms

B - Igor Stravinsky

  • Harmonic structures in the Rite of Spring similar to jazz language
  • Serial technique
  • Metric modulations in jazz and the superimposition of two different, but connected, tempos in the Rite of Spring (simultaneous metric modulation)

C - Béla Bartók

  • Harmonic structures, scales, division of the octave in equal parts, etc .
